The Detective Training School was established on May 1, 1981, by the Maharashtra State Government Home Department Order No. TEX/1086/35-A/Pol-5 dated February 13, 1981, to meet the growing needs of investigation in the Maharashtra Police Force. The institution has established itself as a dedicated organization providing specialized training to police officers and personnel to combat the changing nature of crime and new challenges in investigation. This institution received the ISO 9001:2000 quality certification on March 7, 2009, as per Order No. 09Q/1828/B for excellent work.

From its establishment until April 23, 2022, the institution operated in an old building within the Maharashtra Police Academy (MPA) premises in Nashik. After the completion of construction by the Maharashtra Police Housing and Welfare Corporation at Anandwan Colony, Sharanpur Link Road, Nashik (Government Plot No. 1045/727/B, Plot No. 522A) - including a three-story administrative building, an eight-story hostel building, and a 200-capacity dining hall - the institution was relocated to the new modern building from April 24, 2022.

In accordance with the improved training policy created as per the vision of the Hon. Director General of Police, Maharashtra State, Mumbai, and as per the orders of the Hon. Additional Director General of Police, Training & Special Units, Maharashtra State, Mumbai, a 2-week induction training for personnel promoted to the rank of Police Sub-Inspector and Professional Skill Upgradation training for personnel from Police Constable to Assistant Police Sub-Inspector rank completing 10, 20, and 30 years of service has been practically commenced. Accordingly, new curricula for PSU-1, PSU-2, and PSU-3 courses have been prepared.

Traffic police personnel who are directly visible to the public while regulating traffic on roads play a crucial role in creating the public's perception of the police force. To create respect, belonging, and a sense of security towards the police force among the general public, the role of traffic police is important. For this purpose, to develop necessary skills and quality in traffic management among traffic police personnel, a 2-week training program in traffic management was started at the Detective Training School, Nashik from September 19, 2022, as per the concept presented by the Hon. Director General of Police, Maharashtra State, Mumbai, and implemented as per the orders of the Hon. Additional Director General of Police, Training & Special Units.

Since the Central Government has newly enacted major criminal laws - Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita-2023, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita-2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam-2023 - it is necessary for all investigating officers to have updated information about the provisions of new laws. Therefore, as per the order dated January 16, 2024, of the Hon. Additional Director General of Police, Training & Special Units, a 3-day role-based training was organized from January 22, 2024, at the Detective Training School, Nashik for officers of Police Sub-Inspector, Assistant Police Inspector, and Police Inspector ranks working in various units in Maharashtra. A total of 19 training sessions were organized, in which a total of 1,747 police officers successfully completed the training.

Basic 2-day training sessions were organized for Muddamal (property) clerks from January 6, 2025, to March 18, 2025. A total of 16 training sessions were conducted for Muddamal clerks, and a total of 1,332 police personnel successfully completed the training. For Crime clerks, 2-day basic training sessions were organized from January 6, 2025, to March 21, 2025. A total of 17 training sessions were conducted for Crime clerks, and a total of 1,434 police personnel successfully completed the training. For Confidential personnel, 2-day basic training sessions were organized from March 24, 2025, to May 30, 2025. A total of 16 training sessions were conducted, and a total of 1,404 police personnel successfully completed the training. For Cash clerks/Munshis, 2-day basic training sessions were organized from March 24, 2025, to May 23, 2025. A total of 14 training sessions were conducted, and a total of 1,123 police personnel successfully completed the training.

In pursuance of the Maharashtra Government Gazette Extraordinary Part Four-A dated May 6, 2025, regarding determining the rank of police officer as per the order of the investigating police officer by the police station personnel officer for the purpose of sub-section (1) of Section 176 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita-2023 (46 of 2023), special training courses on investigation for graduate police constables were prepared. Training of Trainers (TOT) for investigating personnel of Police Sub-Inspector to Police Inspector rank was organized in Session No. 1 from June 30, 2025, to July 5, 2025, and Session No. 2 from July 21, 2025, to August 20, 2025. A total of 54 and 70 police officers were trained respectively.

In addition to the above training, training sessions have been organized for Custom Police Constables, Human Rights workshops on behavior from a human rights perspective, DLMT, Home Guard, Public Prosecutors, Bharosa Cell, and Forensic Van/Eye Bike.

In addition, the Detective Training School encourages social responsibility among police officers and police personnel trainees during basic training by organizing blood donation camps in cooperation with District General Hospital, Nashik. Tree plantation is also done to create environmental awareness among trainees. Lectures are also organized during training sessions by medical officers, yoga teachers, and experts in health, hygiene, proper diet, treatment methods, and financial planning for trainees.

The Crime Investigation School adopts an ideal training method by properly integrating all subjects including ideal police, ideal work procedures in crime investigation, forensic science and forensic medicine, social responsibility, health, and financial planning.
